Not only is the billboard near Mile High Stadium, it’s also right next to Mile High Liquors. The group Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol said on its website that the location was optimal because it will force some drinkers to confront their bias toward marijuana users. (via The Raw Story)

[insert witty title here]: A Few Words About Adam Yauch, the Beastie Boys, and a Terrible Car

dangerguerrero:

When I was 16, I bought a terrible car. Even at an age when I had little to no experience as a driver, that was abundantly clear. It looked like hell — from the terrible color and design to the terrible dents and scratches I put into the body through a mix of inexperience and bravado — and,…

Study: All participants showed a reduction of gray matter volume in cortical and subcortical regions as a linear function of increasing calendar age. However, the annual rate of global gray matter volume loss in cocaine-dependent individuals was almost twice the rate of healthy volunteers (that is, 3.08 ml per year versus 1.69 ml per year). Consequently, the rate of age-related gray matter volume loss in cocaine-dependent individuals was significantly greater than in healthy volunteers.  Accelerated ageing in cocaine-dependent individuals was also demonstrated by a significant age-by-group interaction on gray matter volume of the regions affected by age. Cocaine-dependent individuals showed a significantly greater-than-normal age-related decline in gray matter in prefrontal and temporal regions compared with healthy controls.

Not a cokehead here, so more worried about the fact that pieces of our brains are disappearing on a consistent basis as early as age 20.

The Invisible Borders That Define American Culture

One of the clearest regional differences in the U.S. can found by tracking the words people use to refer to soft drinks, which is in fact the map you saw at the top of this story. Pop or soda, or even Coke, these small linguistic differences are not as small as we might think. While “soda” commands the Northeast and West Coast (green) and “pop” is in between (black), “Coke” reigns in the south (turquoise). These small distinctions can often act as touchstones for larger cultural differences.

This is what your ballot should look like, folks. Come on NC, let’s do this!

For the first eight years of our marriage, [Michelle and I] were paying more in student loans than what we were paying for our mortgage. So we know what this is about.

And we were lucky to land good jobs with a steady income. But we only finished paying off our student loans—check this out, all right, I’m the President of the United States—we only finished paying off our student loans about eight years ago.
